Nova for women and children is a specialist homelessness and domestic violence support service operating in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie for over 35 years. Nova supports women (with or without children) that are experiencing homelessness, at risk of homelessness, or escaping domestic or family violence.
Nova has four crisis accommodation centres throughout the local area, and across these sites, we have up to 80 women and children each and every night under our roof. Most nights we are full.
Each year (even at 95% capacity) we provide over 27,700 nights’ accommodation to vulnerable women and children and keep them safe. That is a dreadful statistic for our town and one that is sadly not getting better.
In addition to this, Nova has 2 local drop in centres, - one in Newcastle West which has been established for a number of years, and now, our brand new hub that we have just opened in Charlestown behind the square. Our Hubs are often the first point of contact for people in need. Here they can just drop in without an appointment, chat to staff, discuss their situation, seek advice, use our facilities, shower, wash their clothes as well as receive assistance with food, clothing and more.
In the last financial year, Nova assisted 1454 women and children, which equates to over 5 people a day walking through our door in need.
What We Stand For:
Nova believes in, and our practice reflects, the rights of women and their children:
• To live and participate in the community safely
• To make choices in their own lives
In an ideal world, we would hope one day that we could close our doors as our service is not required, but unfortunately we can't see that happening.
We hope that one day you never need our service, but meanwhile, we look forward to your vote as a way of recognising the work we do for those vulnerable women and children that do.
